Varicose veins are sometimes mistaken with Spider Veins which are similar but not exactly the same. “Varicose veins’ is a condition wherein veins become enlarged and gnarled. Though the condition can affect almost any vein, veins in feet and legs are amongst the most commonly affected ones. This is because while standing and walking extreme pressure is tolerated by veins in your lower body. The condition may affect man and woman equally. For many individuals, it may seem as merely a cosmetic concern; while in others it may bring about excruciating pain and discomfort. In some cases the condition may also lead to more serious issues. This condition may also be a formidable sign of other severe circulatory problems. There are certain treatments that may include procedures performed by a doctor, medications, removal of the vein or self care etc. There are certain symptoms that are associated with varicose vein which are further mentioned in this article.
Symptoms Of Varicose Veins:
This condition usually does not cause pain. However one of the most common symptoms of varicose veins is associated with the vein itself. To be precise, under the prevalence of the condition, the affected vein may become blue or dark purple in color. These veins may appear to be twisted and bulging out of your skin similar to a cord on your leg. In some cases there are chances that painful symptoms may be experienced by the affected women. This may cause a heavy feeling or ache in your leg. Some other symptoms may include:
- Burning sensation of the leg
- Throbbing of the affected vein
- Swelling of legs
- Muscle cramp
- Aggravation of pain after standing or sitting
- Itching sensation around the vein
In some cases there may be development of skin ulcer around your ankle. This may indicate that you have a serious form of a vascular issue which may require immediate medical attention. Self care measures such as exercising, wearing compression stockings and elevating your legs may help you in reducing pain caused due to varicose veins. These self care measures may also help in preventing the condition from exacerbating. However if you are concerned about the look of your legs as well, then self care measures will not be enough.
There are several causes that may lead to varicose veins. One of the most common causes leading to the condition is aging. As you grow older your body veins start losing its elasticity and may become weak. Moreover the valves may become malfunctioned. This may cause the blood to flow backwards. This leads to pooling of blood in the vein which causes the vein to become enlarged and varicose. In some cases women may also experience the condition during pregnancy. This is because the amount of blood in your body increases during pregnancy.
Fortunately you do not have to be hospitalized for treating the condition. Home care methods such as exercising, loose cloth, weight loss etc. can help in alleviating the symptoms of the condition. Sometimes even doctors may suggest wearing compression stockings. Other treatments may involve Sclerotherapy, Laser surgeries, Catheter-assisted procedures, Vein stripping, Ambulatory phlebectomy and Endoscopic vein surgery.
