What Are The Causes And Treatment For Periodontal Disease?

People pay attention to the entire body but when it comes to the oral health, they neglect. This later on causes various oral problems. One such could be the gum infections or diseases. This is also known as periodontal diseases or gingivitis.

Periodontal Disease_2As we are aware, gums are important as they not only hold the teeth but also supplies blood to them. Because of this, we are able to have nice and strong teeth. Any infection to them and the entire mouth set up can get affected.

Causes:

There is a slight difference between gingivitis and periodontal disease. Gingivitis is the advanced stage and is also known as gum inflammation. This proceeds to periodontal disease, which is known as gum disease. Although, not all gum inflammations proceed to gum infection.

As we know that the mouth is full of bacteria. This bacteria mixes up with various particles like mucus to form a colorless and sticky ‘plague’ on teeth, constantly. These can be removed with regular brushing and flossing. If, this plague gets harder, it converts into tartar which can be cleaned only by a professional.

If, this stays for longer periods, they start to cause trouble to the gum. The bacteria cause gum inflammation or gingivitis. In this case, the gums are swollen, become red and can easily bleed. Although a regular brushing and a visit to the dentist can take care of it. This is possible as the bacteria didn’t cause any trouble to the tissue or bone which is holding the teeth.

If, the gingivitis is left untreated, it could develop into periodontal problem. It is a situation where the inner gum and bone get separate from the teeth. This form pockets. Then, there are possibilities of getting debris and thus creates infection. Although, the body’s immune system fights back the bacteria as they move below the gum line.

Body’s good enzyme along with the toxins or poisons, which are produced by the bacteria, gets involved in the fighting. This, in turn, breaks down the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth. As the disease increases, the more gum tissues are broken. This creates loosen of the teeth and it is no more in the same place. This is the major reason of loss of teeth in elderly adult.

Treatment:

It is better that the gum disease is stops at the early stage, i.e. at the level of gingivitis. So one needs to brush and floss the teeth regularly so that the deposition of bacteria can be stopped.
