Naltima contains naltrexone, an opioid antagonist and a synthetic relative of oxymorphone without opioid agonist properties. Since naltrexone is a pure opioid antagonist, it completely blocks, reversibly, the effects of opioids. Studies have shown that naltrexone blocks the pharmacologic effects of opiates for as long as 24 hours. It also blocks the effects of opioids by binding at opioid receptors. The exact mechanism of action of Naltima in treating alcoholism is not clearly understood. However, the drug has shown a remarkable effect in reducing alcohol intake in clinical studies.
